WHAT IS "REVERSION"?

Reversion is a normal condition in a 4 stroke engine. It is most prevalent in higher horsepower Gasoline engines. When the piston reaches top dead center (TDC) on the exhaust stoke there is valve overlap. The exhaust valve remains open for a short period of time as the piston is going down on the intake stroke. This causes a negative pressure pulse (vacuum) in the exhaust manifold. Water droplets that exist in the exhaust system are literally "sucked" into the engine's cylinder at low RPMs causing premature wear and tear due to raw water exposure to the valves, valve seats, and cylinders.

Above 1500 rpm this condition corrects itself due to increased piston speed.   Reversion / water ingestion is the leading cause of engine failure and affects millions of boat owner's world wide.

A few examples of water reversion include corrosion and salt build up in exhaust risers, salt build up in manifolds, and corrosion in engine cyclinders.
